Who We Are
Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a small but active congregation of the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Founded in 1892, Bethlehem now has 50 folks on an average Sunday who gather for worship.
Bethlehem is also part of the Florence Parish, a partnership in Christian ministry with our sister congregation First Presbyterian Church, (Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.) of Florence, Wisconsin. For more than 25 years Bethlehem and First have shared a pastor, educational ministries, worship together (around 15 times per year) and fellowship and life together.
Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a ministry of regular, ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds who are seeking the warmth, support and challenges which are offered by the love of God in Jesus Christ through Christian fellowship. Called by God through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit we are striving to be a faithful, visible expression of God’s love, forgiveness, presence and peace to the world.
This is done as we worship, learn serve, share and witness together in the name of Jesus Christ.
It is not our goal to bring people to this church family from other churches. If you have a church that meets
your individual needs or those of your family, we urge you to attend there regularly and celebrate and strengthen your relationship with God there. But, if you do not have a church home and are looking for a place where you can be yourself and meet God where you are, we invite you to join us and become involved in the Bethlehem Family of God.
As a member congregation of the ELCA we believe that all are welcome. So when we invite you to come join us, we mean completely. Attend worship with us, share in Holy Communion (our Lord’s holy supper), fellowship over a cup of coffee or juice, join in a Bible Study, pray with us, bring your children to Sunday School, and roll up your sleeves and join us in our mission of service in the name of Jesus Christ. We do God’s work with our hands.
We want you to feel comfortable to simply come and be with us. There is no pressure to join Bethlehem, but simply come and see if this is the place that you’ve been looking for to explore your faith and invest your energy in God’s name.

A congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and it's Northern Great Lakes Synod, Bethlehem Lutheran Church welcome you!! Committed to proclaiming, teaching, celebrating and living the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Bethlehem Family of God is a vibrant and caring group of people who are pleased to have you join us for worship, or to become part of our church family.

A Lutheran is:
- A member of the larger body of Christ including all followers of Jesus (Roman Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, non-affiliated, etc.)
- Completely reliant on the grace of God for salvation.
- Baptized once for the forgiveness of sin and regularly receives the sacrament of Holy Communion.
- Claimed by God, marked with the cross of Christ and sealed with the Holy Spirit.
- A Servant within his/her family, church and community.
- There is one God made known in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- God the Father created and sustains all things.
- In the person of Jesus the Christ God came into our world in order to bring us salvation. Through Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection, God has freed us from sin and guilt, and has brought to us the promise of new life.
- God's Holy Spirit continues to walk with us in our daily lives, calling us to faith, nurturing us as we grow in our faith, and renewing us each day.
- The Bible is the inspired word of God.
- The Bible tells the story of God's relationship with God's people.
- The Bible is not a rule book but a "living word" that calls us to radical change.
- All people have worth and dignity because we are all crated in God's image. Nonetheless, each of us falls victim to our human weakness and to our sinful nature. We humans reject God, we choose to follow our own path, and by our own power, we are unable to find life and salvation.
- God's unconditional love for us gives us freedom to be honest about our doubts, our fears, and our failures as well as our joys and succeses.
- We are accepted before God not because of anything we do but simply by our trust in God.
- We are saved by grace through faith (Galatians 2:15-16).
- We experience God's saving action in Holy Baptism.
- In Baptism we are also called to be disciples of Jesus, and through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered each day in our service and our witness.
- And each day we are being saved through the work of the Holy Spirit!
Jesus said, "Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die." (John 11:25-26)
What Must a Person Do to Become a Lutheran?
To become a Lutheran, only Baptism and some instruction in the Christian faith is required. If you are already baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, it will be necessary only to attend a short membership class in a Lutheran congregation and thus signify your desire to become a part of its community. Active members of other Lutheran congregations usually need only to transfer their membership.
Lutherans . . .
. . . are regular, ordinary people, with all the hurts, pains, and weaknesses shared by all of humanity.
. . . have been called to faith and to community by God's Holy Spirit.
. . . gather around the gifts of God's grace given to us through the cross and the empty tomb of Jesus.
. . . go forth to be God's people in the world, to proclaim in word and deed the grace of God. We know that we have something the world desperately needs!
. . . recognize great value in the ministry that each one of us carries out in our daily life. Not all are called to the traditional ministry of the church, but all are called to be ministers each and every day.
. . . continue to struggle with sin but do so in the confidence of a loving and gracious God who nurtures us, sometimes disciplines us, and always welcomes us back!
. . . know that in the end our life, our faith, our discipleship - and our future are not our own, but God's to guide, direct, and sustain!
Mission Statement
As a community of people created in God's image, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and believing in the Biblical message of Jesus Christ, the mission of Bethlehem Lutheran Church is to:
- Provide the means for personal and congregational worship through prayer, praise and thanksgiving.
- Proclaim and teach the Gospel through Word and Sacrament.
- Promote living the Gospel through love, forgiveness and patience.
- Encourage persons to recognize, develop and share their own gifts and talents for ministry, thus providing the resources to evangelize and meet the physical and spiritual needs of our congregation, our community, and the world.
